Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • No tab bar in File Explorer on Windows 11
  • Ctrl+T doesn't open new tab in File Explorer
  • Tabs were working but disappeared after an update
  • File Explorer opens new windows instead of tabs
  • Tab option missing from right-click context menu
  • Middle-click on folder doesn't open in new tab

Common Causes

  • Windows 11 version too old (tabs require 22H2 or later)
  • File Explorer tabs feature disabled via registry or Group Policy
  • Third-party file manager or shell extension overriding Explorer
  • Corrupted Explorer configuration
  • Windows Update failed to install the tabs feature properly
  • Corporate policy disabling Explorer tabs

Solutions

Solution 1: Check Windows Version

  1. 1File Explorer tabs require Windows 11 version 22H2 or later
  2. 2Check version: Win+R → winver → Enter
  3. 3If version is older than 22H2: install the latest Windows Update
  4. 4Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates
  5. 5Download and install any available feature updates
  6. 6Windows 10 does NOT have File Explorer tabs — only Windows 11 22H2+

Solution 2: Re-Enable Tabs

  1. 1If on correct version but tabs are missing:
  2. 2Check if a registry key is disabling them:
  3. 3Regedit → HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID\{2aa9162e-c906-4dd9-ad0b-3d24a8eef5a0}
  4. 4If this key exists with a value blocking tabs: delete the key
  5. 5Also check: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Blocked
  6. 6Remove any entries related to Explorer tabs
  7. 7Restart Explorer: Task Manager → Windows Explorer → Restart

Solution 3: Fix Corrupted Explorer

  1. 1If tabs still don't appear:
  2. 2CMD as Admin: sfc /scannow
  3. 3Then: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  4. 4Check for third-party tools overriding Explorer:
  5. 5ExplorerPatcher, StartAllBack, OldNewExplorer can disable tabs
  6. 6Temporarily uninstall these tools to test
  7. 7Create a new user profile to test if it's profile-specific
  8. 8Last resort: Windows 11 in-place upgrade repair install
