Symptoms
You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:
- •"The event log file is full" notification
- •Event Viewer shows thousands of error entries
- •System log filling up rapidly with repeated errors
- •Application log consuming gigabytes of disk space
- •Event Viewer takes very long to open
- •"The event log service is unavailable" error
Common Causes
- ⚠Event log maximum size reached with no auto-overwrite
- ⚠Recurring error generating thousands of log entries
- ⚠Log retention set to "Do not overwrite events"
- ⚠Application logging excessively (crash loop, driver error)
- ⚠Event Log service corrupted
- ⚠Security audit logging filling the Security log
Solutions
Solution 1: Clear Event Logs
- 1Open Event Viewer (search in Start)
- 2Expand Windows Logs
- 3Right-click "Application" > Clear Log (save if you want a backup)
- 4Right-click "System" > Clear Log
- 5Right-click "Security" > Clear Log
- 6Also clear Setup and Forwarded Events if large
Solution 2: Configure Log Auto-Overwrite
- 1In Event Viewer: right-click a log > Properties
- 2Under "When maximum event log size is reached":
- 3Select "Overwrite events as needed" (recommended)
- 4Set "Maximum log size" to 20-50 MB (default 20 MB is fine)
- 5Do this for Application, System, and Security logs
- 6Click Apply — logs will now auto-rotate and never fill up
Solution 3: Find and Fix the Recurring Error
- 1Before clearing logs: identify what's generating the errors
- 2In Event Viewer > System log, sort by Level: "Error"
- 3Note the Source (e.g., "Service Control Manager", "Disk", "WHEA-Logger")
- 4Google the Event ID number for specific fixes
- 5Common: Event ID 7031 (service crash), 51 (disk warning), 41 (unexpected shutdown)
- 6Fixing the root cause prevents logs from filling up again
