Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • "[Program] has stopped working" dialog appears frequently
  • WerFault.exe visible in Task Manager using CPU
  • Error reporting dialog pops up even for minor crashes
  • Multiple error reports queued and appearing at once
  • "Problem reporting" constantly running in background
  • Error reports failing to send and retrying repeatedly

Common Causes

  • Application crashing repeatedly triggering WER each time
  • WER queue backed up with old crash reports
  • WerFault.exe hanging instead of completing
  • Third-party app crash loop generating constant reports
  • Corrupted WER queue database
  • Disabled or misconfigured error reporting service

Solutions

Solution 1: Clear Error Reporting Queue

  1. 1Open File Explorer
  2. 2Navigate to: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportQueue
  3. 3Delete all folders inside (these are old crash reports)
  4. 4Also clear: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportArchive
  5. 5And: C:\Users\[YourName]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WER
  6. 6Restart your computer

Solution 2: Disable Error Reporting Popups

  1. 1Go to Control Panel > Security and Maintenance
  2. 2Click "Maintenance" to expand it
  3. 3Under "Report problems" — click "Problem reporting settings"
  4. 4Select "Each time a problem occurs, ask me before checking for solutions"
  5. 5Or: open gpedit.msc > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates
  6. 6Windows Components > Windows Error Reporting > set "Disable Windows Error Reporting" to Enabled

Solution 3: Fix the Crashing App

  1. 1Check the error report details — note which .exe is crashing
  2. 2Update the crashing application to the latest version
  3. 3If a game: verify game file integrity through Steam/Epic
  4. 4Try running the app in compatibility mode
  5. 5Right-click .exe > Properties > Compatibility tab
  6. 6Check "Run as administrator" or try Windows 8/10 compatibility mode
