📖

Main Troubleshooting Guide

How to Fix 100% Disk Usage

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • DISM /RestoreHealth fails with "source files could not be found"
  • WinSxS folder consuming 10+ GB of disk space
  • Windows Update fails with component store corruption errors
  • CBS.log shows repeated component store hash mismatch errors
  • SFC /scannow reports "could not perform the requested operation"
  • Feature installation fails referencing component store

Common Causes

  • Windows Update left orphaned components in the store
  • Failed updates corrupted component store manifests
  • Interrupted servicing operations damaged pending.xml
  • Disk space exhaustion prevented cleanup of superseded components
  • Third-party cleanup tools improperly deleted WinSxS contents
  • Hard drive errors corrupted component store files

Solutions

Solution 1: Clean Up Component Store

  1. 1Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. 2Analyze component store: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore
  3. 3If cleanup is recommended: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
  4. 4For aggressive cleanup of all superseded versions:
  5. 5DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase
  6. 6Warning: /ResetBase removes ability to uninstall updates — use carefully
  7. 7Check remaining WinSxS size — most is hard-linked (actual size is smaller)
  8. 8To see true size: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore

Solution 2: Repair Corrupted Component Store

  1. 1Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. 2Check for corruption: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
  3. 3If corruption detected: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  4. 4If RestoreHealth fails (no source), use a Windows ISO:
  5. 5Mount the ISO or insert Windows installation media
  6. 6DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:D:\sources\install.wim
  7. 7Replace D: with your media drive letter
  8. 8After DISM completes, run: sfc /scannow

Solution 3: Fix Pending Operations and CBS Errors

  1. 1If component servicing is stuck:
  2. 2Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  3. 3Check for pending operations:
  4. 4DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions
  5. 5This cancels incomplete servicing operations
  6. 6Restart the computer
  7. 7Check CBS log: type %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log | findstr /i "error"
  8. 8If errors persist, rename the pending.xml:
  9. 9ren %windir%\WinSxS\pending.xml pending.xml.bak
  10. 10Restart and retry Windows Update
