How to Fix Bluetooth Not Working

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Bluetooth audio stutters every few seconds
  • Sound cuts out briefly then returns over Bluetooth
  • Audio crackling or popping on wireless headphones
  • Bluetooth speaker plays choppy or broken audio
  • Music or video audio skips on Bluetooth devices
  • Audio fine on wired connection but stutters on Bluetooth

Common Causes

  • Bluetooth driver outdated or incompatible
  • WiFi and Bluetooth interference on shared radio
  • Bluetooth audio codec not optimal for device
  • Power management turning off Bluetooth adapter
  • Too many Bluetooth devices connected simultaneously
  • Bluetooth adapter range or obstruction issues

Solutions

Solution 1: Update Bluetooth Drivers and Disable Power Saving

  1. 1Update Bluetooth adapter driver:
  2. 2Device Manager → Bluetooth → right-click adapter
  3. 3Update driver → Search automatically
  4. 4Also check manufacturer website for latest driver
  5. 5Disable Bluetooth power management:
  6. 6Device Manager → Bluetooth → right-click adapter
  7. 7Properties → Power Management tab
  8. 8Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
  9. 9Also do this for USB Root Hubs if Bluetooth is USB-based:
  10. 10Device Manager → Universal Serial Bus controllers
  11. 11Each USB Root Hub → Properties → Power Management
  12. 12Uncheck power saving option
  13. 13Restart PC and test audio

Solution 2: Reduce WiFi Interference and Optimize Codec

  1. 1WiFi and Bluetooth share 2.4 GHz band:
  2. 2Switch WiFi to 5 GHz band if router supports it
  3. 3Settings → Network → Wi-Fi → preferred band to 5 GHz
  4. 4This frees 2.4 GHz for Bluetooth
  5. 5Change Bluetooth audio quality:
  6. 6Settings → System → Sound → your Bluetooth device
  7. 7If device appears twice (headset and headphones):
  8. 8Use "Headphones" profile (stereo, better quality)
  9. 9Avoid "Headset" profile (mono, lower quality)
  10. 10Disable Hands-Free Telephony if not needed:
  11. 11Settings → Bluetooth & devices → your device → Properties
  12. 12Uncheck "Handsfree Telephony"
  13. 13This forces higher quality A2DP codec

Solution 3: Reset Bluetooth and Troubleshoot Hardware

  1. 1Remove and re-pair the Bluetooth device:
  2. 2Settings → Bluetooth & devices → find device
  3. 3Click three dots → Remove device
  4. 4Put device in pairing mode
  5. 5Re-add via "Add device" → Bluetooth
  6. 6Reset Bluetooth service:
  7. 7services.msc → "Bluetooth Support Service"
  8. 8Right-click → Restart
  9. 9Also restart "Bluetooth Audio Gateway Service"
  10. 10Check for physical interference:
  11. 11Move closer to PC (within 3 feet for testing)
  12. 12Remove obstructions between device and adapter
  13. 13Disconnect other Bluetooth devices temporarily
  14. 14If USB Bluetooth adapter: try different USB port
  15. 15Front ports often have better reception than rear
