How to Fix Slow Computer

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Start menu opens with noticeable delay
  • Window minimize/maximize animations stutter
  • Scrolling in Settings app is choppy
  • Taskbar animations feel sluggish
  • Alt+Tab preview animation lags
  • Desktop feels smooth after a fresh restart but degrades over time

Common Causes

  • Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling misconfigured
  • Desktop Window Manager (DWM) using excessive resources
  • Transparency effects consuming GPU on integrated graphics
  • Display driver not properly handling compositing
  • Too many background processes consuming resources
  • Windows visual effects set too high for hardware capability

Solutions

Solution 1: Disable Transparency and Reduce Effects

  1. 1Go to Settings > Personalization > Colors
  2. 2Turn OFF "Transparency effects"
  3. 3Go to Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects
  4. 4Turn OFF "Transparency effects" and "Animation effects"
  5. 5This immediately reduces GPU/CPU load for UI rendering
  6. 6Re-enable selectively to find the balance between looks and performance

Solution 2: Optimize Visual Performance

  1. 1Press Windows + R, type sysdm.cpl
  2. 2Go to Advanced tab > Performance > Settings
  3. 3Select "Adjust for best performance" (disables all effects)
  4. 4Or select "Custom" and keep only:
  5. 5- "Smooth edges of screen fonts"
  6. 6- "Show thumbnails instead of icons"
  7. 7Click Apply — desktop will be snappier immediately

Solution 3: Fix DWM GPU Usage

  1. 1Open Task Manager > Processes
  2. 2Check "Desktop Window Manager" GPU usage
  3. 3If consistently high (>5%): update your display driver
  4. 4Check Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Default graphics settings
  5. 5Try toggling "Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling" ON or OFF
  6. 6Restart after changing — test which setting gives smoother animations
