Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • •Webcam LED light on when no video app is open
  • •Camera light turns on briefly at random times
  • •Camera light on during startup before you open any apps
  • •Webcam light stays on after ending a video call
  • •Camera in use by "another application" error
  • •Suspicious camera activity when not using video apps

Common Causes

  • âš Background app accessing the camera (Skype, Teams auto-start)
  • âš Video call app didn't properly release the camera
  • âš Windows Hello face recognition activating
  • âš Malware accessing the camera (worst case)
  • âš Browser tab with camera permission still open
  • âš Camera app or photo booth running in background

Solutions

Solution 1: Find Which App Is Using the Camera

  1. 1Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Camera
  2. 2Scroll down to "Recent activity"
  3. 3This shows which apps accessed your camera and when
  4. 4The most recent app in the list is likely the culprit
  5. 5For more detail: open Task Manager > check running processes
  6. 6Look for video-related apps: Teams, Zoom, Skype, OBS, etc.

Solution 2: Revoke Camera Permissions

  1. 1Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Camera
  2. 2Turn OFF camera access for apps you don't trust
  3. 3Keep it ON only for apps you actively use for video calls
  4. 4Scroll down and also check "Let desktop apps access your camera"
  5. 5If turned OFF: no traditional .exe apps can use the camera
  6. 6Restart your PC and check if the light stays off

Solution 3: Check for Malware

  1. 1If no legitimate app is using the camera: run a malware scan
  2. 2Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Quick scan
  3. 3Also run: Microsoft Safety Scanner (free, thorough)
  4. 4Download Malwarebytes (free scan) as a second opinion
  5. 5If malware is found: remove it and change your passwords
  6. 6As a physical precaution: use a webcam cover slide when not in calls
