How to Fix External GPU (eGPU) Not Detected or Not Working on Windows

External GPU not recognized, Thunderbolt eGPU not working, or games not using the eGPU? Fix external graphics card issues on Windows.

Main Troubleshooting Guide

How to Fix Driver Issues

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • eGPU enclosure connected but GPU not showing in Device Manager
  • Thunderbolt notification but no GPU detected
  • GPU appears in Device Manager but games use integrated graphics
  • eGPU causes blue screen when connected
  • "Error 12: not enough resources" for eGPU in Device Manager
  • eGPU works on external monitor but not laptop screen

Common Causes

  • Thunderbolt security settings blocking the device
  • BIOS doesn't support or has disabled external GPUs
  • GPU driver not installed for the eGPU
  • PCIe allocation insufficient — Error 12
  • eGPU requires external monitor for best compatibility
  • Thunderbolt firmware outdated

Solutions

Solution 1: Authorize Thunderbolt Device

  1. 1When you connect the eGPU: Windows should show a Thunderbolt notification
  2. 2Click it → authorize the device → select "Always connect"
  3. 3If no notification: open Thunderbolt Control Center
  4. 4Approve pending devices
  5. 5Some laptops: check BIOS → Thunderbolt settings → set security to "User Authorization"
  6. 6Restart with eGPU connected

Solution 2: Install GPU Driver

  1. 1After eGPU is recognized: install the GPU driver
  2. 2NVIDIA: download from geforce.com
  3. 3AMD: download from amd.com
  4. 4Use "Clean install" option
  5. 5After driver install: restart with eGPU connected
  6. 6Check Device Manager → Display adapters — should show both integrated + eGPU

Solution 3: Fix Error 12 (Not Enough Resources)

  1. 1This means Windows can't allocate enough PCIe resources:
  2. 2BIOS: enable "Above 4G Decoding" or "Large BAR" if available
  3. 3BIOS: disable unused devices (e.g., SD card reader) to free resources
  4. 4Device Manager → disable integrated GPU while using eGPU
  5. 5Some laptops simply don't have enough PCIe lanes for eGPU
  6. 6Check laptop compatibility at egpu.io

Solution 4: Force Apps to Use eGPU

  1. 1Settings → System → Display → Graphics
  2. 2Find the game/app → Options → select "High performance" (eGPU)
  3. 3NVIDIA: right-click desktop → NVIDIA Control Panel → Manage 3D settings
  4. 4Per-program: select the eGPU as preferred
  5. 5Note: rendering on eGPU → laptop screen adds latency due to data traveling back over Thunderbolt
  6. 6Best performance: use an external monitor connected directly to the eGPU
