Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Text in menus and apps is unreadably small
  • Icons on desktop and taskbar are tiny
  • Newly purchased high-res laptop has minuscule UI
  • Text size fine in some apps but tiny in others
  • Scaling looks wrong after connecting external monitor
  • Font size changes didn't apply to all apps

Common Causes

  • Display scaling set to 100% on a high-DPI screen
  • App not DPI-aware (legacy software)
  • Custom DPI scaling override applied
  • Multiple monitors with different DPIs
  • Windows font size setting not applied
  • Resolution set higher than monitor's native size

Solutions

Solution 1: Adjust Display Scaling

  1. 1Right-click desktop > Display settings
  2. 2Under "Scale & layout", find the Scale dropdown
  3. 3For 4K screens: try 150% or 200%
  4. 4For 1440p screens: try 125%
  5. 5For 1080p screens: 100% is usually correct
  6. 6Sign out and back in for all apps to apply the change

Solution 2: Change Text Size Without Scaling

  1. 1Go to Settings > Accessibility > Text size
  2. 2Drag the slider to increase text size
  3. 3Preview appears above the slider
  4. 4Click Apply — this changes text without affecting icon/UI size
  5. 5This affects most Windows UI and many apps

Solution 3: Fix Blurry Apps After Scaling

  1. 1Go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced scaling settings
  2. 2Turn on "Fix scaling for apps" (Windows 10) or "Let Windows try to fix apps" (Win 11)
  3. 3For specific apps: right-click the app shortcut > Properties
  4. 4Go to Compatibility > Change high DPI settings
  5. 5Check "Override high DPI scaling behavior"
  6. 6Set "Scaling performed by:" to "System (Enhanced)"
