How to Fix Default Apps Keep Resetting on Windows on Windows

Windows keeps changing your default browser, PDF reader, or media player back to Microsoft defaults? Fix default app associations resetting on Windows 10 and 11.

📖

Main Troubleshooting Guide

How to Fix Microsoft Store Not Working

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Default browser keeps resetting to Microsoft Edge
  • PDF files keep opening in Edge instead of Adobe Reader or another PDF viewer
  • Image files opening in Photos app instead of your preferred viewer
  • Music or video files opening in Windows Media Player or Movies & TV instead of VLC
  • Default apps reset after every Windows Update
  • "An app default was reset" notification appearing frequently
  • File associations you set keep reverting to Microsoft defaults

Common Causes

  • Windows Updates resetting UserChoice registry entries for file associations
  • Corrupted UserChoice hash in the registry preventing custom defaults from persisting
  • Application updates overwriting file associations
  • Windows "recommended" app features aggressively suggesting Microsoft apps
  • Third-party apps not properly registering their file type capabilities
  • Multiple apps competing for the same file type registration
  • Group Policy or organization settings enforcing default apps

Solutions

Solution 1: Set Default Apps Properly

  1. 1Open Settings → Apps → Default apps
  2. 2Click the app you want as default (e.g., Chrome, Firefox, VLC)
  3. 3Set it as default for each file type it should handle
  4. 4For browsers: also scroll down and set .htm, .html, HTTP, HTTPS all to your browser
  5. 5For media players: set .mp4, .mkv, .avi, .mp3, .flac etc.
  6. 6Windows 11 requires setting each file type individually — there's no single "set as default for all"

Solution 2: Prevent Windows Update from Resetting Defaults

  1. 1After setting your defaults, export the registry key for backup:
  2. 2Open Registry Editor → navigate to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts
  3. 3Right-click FileExts → Export → save as defaults-backup.reg
  4. 4After a Windows Update resets your defaults: double-click the .reg file to restore them
  5. 5Note: the UserChoice hash is version-specific, so this may not always work after major updates
  6. 6If it fails: re-set defaults manually through Settings after each update

Solution 3: Disable Edge as Default PDF Handler

  1. 1Edge aggressively registers itself as the PDF handler
  2. 2Open Edge → Settings → Downloads → turn OFF "Open Office files in the browser"
  3. 3Go to Settings → Apps → Default apps → search for .pdf → change to your PDF reader
  4. 4If it keeps reverting: open your PDF reader (Adobe, Foxit, SumatraPDF) → Settings → set as default PDF handler from within the app
  5. 5Some PDF readers have a "Always check if default" setting — enable it

Solution 4: Fix Using SetUserFTA Tool

  1. 1For persistent issues: download SetUserFTA (free tool by Christoph Kolbicz)
  2. 2This tool properly sets the UserChoice hash that Windows validates
  3. 3Open Command Prompt in the tool folder
  4. 4Run: SetUserFTA .pdf AcroExch.Document.DC (for Adobe Acrobat)
  5. 5Run: SetUserFTA http ChromeHTML (for Chrome as default browser)
  6. 6Run: SetUserFTA .mp4 VLC.mp4 (for VLC as default video player)
  7. 7This tool creates properly hashed associations that Windows won't reject
