How to Fix Audio Delay or Latency Issues on Windows

Audio delayed behind video, game sound lagging behind actions, or music production latency too high? Fix audio latency issues on Windows.

📖

Main Troubleshooting Guide

How to Fix No Audio or Sound

Complete symptoms, causes, and step-by-step solutions

Symptoms

You might be experiencing this problem if you notice:

  • Audio noticeably behind video in movies and streams
  • Game sound effects delayed after actions
  • Bluetooth audio has a half-second delay
  • Music production: audible latency when recording
  • Voice chat delayed compared to others
  • Audio crackles or pops during latency spikes

Common Causes

  • Bluetooth codec adding latency (SBC vs aptX)
  • Audio buffer size too large
  • DPC latency from drivers or hardware
  • Wrong audio output device selected
  • Audio processing/enhancements adding delay
  • USB audio interface driver not optimized (ASIO needed)

Solutions

Solution 1: Fix Bluetooth Audio Latency

  1. 1Bluetooth inherently adds latency (40-200ms depending on codec)
  2. 2For gaming/video: use wired headphones instead — zero latency
  3. 3If Bluetooth required: check if your headphones support aptX Low Latency
  4. 4Go to Settings > Bluetooth > click your device > properties
  5. 5Some Bluetooth adapters support aptX — check manufacturer specs
  6. 6For video: most media players have audio sync/delay settings to compensate

Solution 2: Reduce System Audio Latency

  1. 1Right-click speaker icon > Sounds > Playback tab
  2. 2Double-click your device > Advanced tab
  3. 3Uncheck "Allow applications to take exclusive control" temporarily to test
  4. 4Try different sample rates: 44100 Hz or 48000 Hz, 16-bit
  5. 5Higher sample rates can reduce latency but use more CPU
  6. 6Disable all audio enhancements — they add processing latency

Solution 3: Fix Music Production Latency (ASIO)

  1. 1For music production: install your audio interface's ASIO driver
  2. 2If no dedicated interface: install ASIO4ALL (free universal ASIO driver)
  3. 3In your DAW: select ASIO driver instead of Windows Audio
  4. 4Reduce buffer size: start at 256 samples, go lower if stable
  5. 5128 samples ≈ 3ms latency at 44.1kHz
  6. 6If you get crackles: increase buffer size slightly until stable
