Why Does WiFi Keep Disconnecting?

Common causes of WiFi drops on Windows:

  • Power management - Windows turns off WiFi to save power
  • Outdated drivers - Old drivers cause instability
  • Network adapter settings - Wrong configuration
  • Router issues - Channel congestion or firmware bugs

Fix #1: Disable WiFi Power Management

This is the #1 cause of random disconnections:

  1. Press Win + XDevice Manager
  2. Expand Network adapters
  3. Right-click your WiFi adapter → Properties
  4. Go to Power Management tab
  5. Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
  6. Click OK

Fix #2: Set WiFi to Private Network

  1. Click the WiFi icon in taskbar
  2. Click Properties on your network
  3. Set Network profile to Private

Fix #3: Forget and Reconnect

  1. Go to Settings → Network & Internet → WiFi
  2. Click Manage known networks
  3. Click your network → Forget
  4. Reconnect and enter password again

Fix #4: Update WiFi Drivers

  1. Open Device Manager
  2. Expand Network adapters
  3. Right-click WiFi adapter → Update driver
  4. Choose Search automatically

If that doesn't work, visit your laptop manufacturer's website and download the latest WiFi driver manually.

Fix #5: Reset TCP/IP Stack

Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:

netsh winsock reset netsh int ip reset ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew ipconfig /flushdns

Restart your PC after running these commands.

Fix #6: Disable WiFi Sense

  1. Go to Settings → Network & Internet → WiFi
  2. Turn off Connect to suggested open hotspots
  3. Turn off Connect to networks shared by my contacts

Fix #7: Change WiFi Channel

If your neighbors use the same channel, you get interference:

  1. Log into your router (usually 192.168.1.1)
  2. Find Wireless Settings
  3. Change channel from Auto to 1, 6, or 11
  4. For 5GHz, try channels 36, 40, 44, or 48

Fix #8: Disable Bluetooth

Bluetooth can interfere with WiFi (they use similar frequencies):

  1. Go to Settings → Devices → Bluetooth
  2. Turn off Bluetooth temporarily
  3. Test if WiFi is stable
